Spring: Prepare and Plant

Spring is the season of renewal, making it the perfect time to prepare your garden for growth. Start by cleaning up debris, pruning dead branches, and enriching the soil with compost or organic matter. Plant cool-season crops like lettuce and spinach early in the season, followed by flowers and vegetables as the weather warms. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Summer: Maintain and Protect

During summer, plants grow rapidly, but the heat can be challenging. Water your garden deeply and consistently, preferably in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation. Apply additional mulch to keep the soil cool and maintain moisture levels. Regularly check for pests and diseases, and address issues promptly with organic or chemical treatments as needed.

Fall: Transition and Enrich

Autumn is a time for transitions. Remove spent annuals and harvest the last of your summer crops. Plant cool-season vegetables like kale or carrots, and add bulbs for spring blooms such as tulips or daffodils. Rake fallen leaves and compost them to create nutrient-rich organic matter for future use. This season is also ideal for dividing and transplanting perennials.

Winter: Protect and Plan

Even in winter, there’s plenty to do to ensure a healthy garden. Protect sensitive plants from frost with covers or burlap wraps. Mulch around roots to insulate them from extreme temperatures. Use this downtime to plan your garden layout for the next season, order seeds, and repair tools to be ready for spring.

Year-Round Tips for Success

  • Rotate Crops: In vegetable gardens, rotating crops each year prevents soil depletion and reduces the risk of pests and diseases.
  • Feed the Soil: Regularly enrich your soil with compost, manure, or organic fertilizers to keep it healthy and productive.
  • Prune Strategically: Prune trees and shrubs at the appropriate time of year to encourage growth and maintain their shape.
